Four Slovenians in the Tour de France
Ljubljana, 30 June 2010 – Jani Brajkovič (RadioShack), Grega Bole (Lampre), Simon Špilak (Lampre), all three formerly of Team Adria Mobil, and Kristijan Koren (Liquigas), are set to participate in the toughest cycling race in Europe, the 2010 Tour de France from 3 to 25 July. The race will start with an 8-kilometre prologue in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and will end 3,596 kilometres later on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
On Monday, 28 June, before the departure on this year’s Tour, the conference facilities at ACH, d.d., saw a press conference in which the riders related their impressions of this year’s cycling season and their expectations for the upcoming race across France. Neither of the Slovenian four – they are all competing for different foreign teams this year – will be at the forefront and they hope to secure at least a stage win or two. In cycling, who the star rider is and who is their domestique is determined by the club. This is why, of the four abovementioned riders, Jani Brajkovič will be most at the forefront and, depending on his performance in the prologue in the Netherlands, may even hope to become the third domestique for the cycling legend Lance Armstrong. If Armstrong were to crash or fall heavily behind, he will be domestique for Levi Leipheimer and Adreas Klöden. Brajkovič is still awaiting his moment of glory in the upcoming seasons and his prospects look good, considering that he is only 26 years old. The situation with Bole, Špilak and Koren is similar. Despite all this though, the fact that these four Slovenian riders are competing in such highly demanding races is in itself an exceptional and prestigious feat.
